DAILY ARCHIVE: Chad Balster

Fri 07 Dec

Chad Balster believes the transformation of glass from liquid to solid is the purest form of artistic expression. In its liquid state, glass is all-potential.

Its final shape is totally dependent on the temperament and skill of the person manipulating it. Balster says this blending of raw materials with an artist’s natural rhythms often results in self-discovery.

“I am excited to be a part of this fusing of energy and action into form,” he explains. “The finished product is born in fire and brought out of the experience of the hot shop. Art that speaks on a number of levels contains more potential for experience. That interaction is what my work is about.”

Glass art has been around since 3000 B.C. and Balster is influenced by both past and contemporary art. His pod series echoes the Medieval Waldglass tradition found in Germany and Bohemia, but adds things he learned from modern painters. The Equinox Pod looks as if it’s made of honey and Balster tooled the edges to evoke a harvested shell husk. The outer blown bits and lip wrap are heavily lustered with gold. The artist also rolled the added glass in powders and frit (a fused, granulated ceramic additive) to make it stand out from the rest of the piece.

Balster was a resident artist at Louisville Glassworks from 2003 to 2011.  In 2012 he started Chad Balster Glass and began construction of The Hotbox, a mobile glass trailer studio. He is also one of the founding members of The Phoenix Collective, a Louisville-based fire performance troupe.
