DAILY ARCHIVE: Charles Mintz

Thu 26 Feb

The exploration of Place is a fundamental theme in art history. In the latest work of photographer Charles Mintz we find something of a preoccupation with this idea, most recently in his series, Lustron Stories: Americans At Home.

Lustron homes are enamel-coated steel constructions built with pre-fabricated elements as a part of the post-World-War II middle class housing boom. The unique visual qualities and extreme durability have insured that many of these houses remain not only intact, but also looking very much like they did when first built more than 60 years ago. Yet Mintz is not just drawn to the singular look of the Lustron abodes, but to the families residing within; a range of personalities and sensibilities reflecting social and cultural diversity beyond the original vision of Lustron neighborhoods. Today they exist in economically challenged areas as well as more exclusive zip codes where the property values reach into the six-figure range.

Three images from this series won Mintz the Grand Prize in LVAA’s 2013 Juried Photo Exhibit, chosen by Rhode Island School of Design Professor Henry Horenstein. Part of the award included a one-person show, Lustron Stories: Americans At Home, which is now on display through March 28, 2015 at PUBLIC, the LVAA gallery in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. It will then travel to the Ohio Historical Society, where it will be exhibited Memorial Day through Labor Day, 2015
