DAILY ARCHIVE: Charles Mintz

Charles Mintz’s newest series, The Beach, is a departure from the conceptual, narrative based work of his other projects. The photographer has historically kept his focus on people: Precious Objects was a series of portraits with prized collectibles, Theaters captured thespians both in and out of costume, Lustron Stories revealed the personalities of people dwelling in durable, pre-fab homes built during the mid-20th century housing boom. One can chart a steady progression towards exploring humans within a specific environment that has led Mintz to the sand, sun and water of a vacation on the beach.

“It is about the simplicity of a week at the beach,” states Mintz. “Nevertheless, vacations are strange things and we see that here.” The images investigate the isolation of individuals inside the deliberate socialization of a resort, establishing a sense of place that is more disquieting than we might expect from a vacation environment. Even when we witness people together on the beach, the stressed out lifeguard towering over them cues the viewer into the fact it is a moment of unease, people forming a collective motivated by a curiosity that feels close to fear. What circumstance has so disturbed the lifeguard, and why are all the people looking up at him and not in the direction in which he is pointing? Mintz uncovers unexpected drama and subtle insights into the human condition at his beach.

Mintz was the recipient of a 2015 Ohio Arts Council Individual Artists Excellence Award, and will be doing a residency in March 2016 at the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley CA. He spent most of the past year on four solo exhibitions (including the one at LVA’s PUBLIC Gallery in Louisville). Trillium Books, an imprint of The Ohio State University Press, will publish a book of his Lustron Stories photographs in fall 2016
