DAILY ARCHIVE: Daniel Pfalzgraf

Fri 29 Jul

Daniel Pfalzgraf’s current series of work, Kentucky Game are blind contour drawings on paper that are then painted in with oil paint and other mixed media and explore the themes of attraction, hunting, and collecting.

One of the objectives in choosing students for the 2016 Future Is Now program is to find a god match with the mentor. Even a cursory glance at the work of Pfalzgraf and his mentee, Fern Creek High School student Katie Galloway, reveals a similar use of animal forms and a technique for mark making that is loose and spontaneous. Even before working with Pfalzgraf, Ms. Galloway was experimenting with mixing mediums, and it will be interesting to see how exposure to her mentor’s fondness for using used motor oil and other unusual combinations of materials might influence the work that will be unveiled in the upcoming exhibit.

The Future is Now exhibit will run August 4 through 26 at The Huff Gallery on the campus of Spalding University. A reception is scheduled for Friday, August 5 from 5-7pm.

Pfalzgraf is a multi-media artist and curator who has been exhibiting art professionally for over sixteen years. He is currently the Curator for the Carnegie Center for Art & History in New Albany, Indiana. Pfalzgraf was also previously Director of The Green Building Gallery, Director of Media Services at B. Deemer Gallery, and an Assistant Preparator at the Speed Art Museum (all in Louisville, Kentucky) and was the Media Coordinator at Bill Lowe Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia. He has also worked as an independent curator creating exhibitions under the name of LoCAL.gallery.

The Future is Now is a mentorship program conceived by Daniel Pfalzgraf and Jackie Pallesen that matches Jefferson County Public School high school students with professional local artists in Louisville, Kentucky. This summer, the program, which is administered by Louisville Visual Art, is partnering with The Kentucky College of Art + Design at Spalding University.
