DAILY ARCHIVE: David Iacovazzi-Pau

Mon 16 Jun

From May 27–June 17, Artebella will feature work by artists exhibiting in The 2014 Artebella Invitational Exhibit. Artists from last year’s Artebella exhibit were asked to extend invitations, and LVAA Exhibit Committee Co-chairs and fellow artists Beverly Glascock and Andrew Cozzens curated final selections from invitee’s submissions. Thus, mutual respect within the community of artists is emphasized by peer recognition.

The art of portraiture has a long tradition in history, yet the appreciation for such work has waned since the advent of photography in the late 18th century. But the detailed observation of a portrait painter like David Iacovazzi-Pau gives us much more than documentation. A photograph can capture many things, but the relationship between the painter and his subject is unique: a specific point-of view, a probing insight into the character and psychology of an individual, and a control over the fluidity of medium and composition.

Iacovazzi-Pau’s work maintains a tradition carried into the modern age by Andrew Wyeth, Lucien Freud, Chuck Close, and many others. While some critics question the role of portraiture in modern art, this artist reinforces the very personal connection such paintings make with collectors, while exhibiting such work to acclaim internationally.

Iacovazzi-Pau was born in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, where he attended the Centre Académique des Arts. He immigrated to the United States in 1997, and studied art at Indiana University Southeast. His paintings have been exhibited in group and solo shows both nationally and internationally. Earlier this year, Iacovazzi-Pau was a finalist in the 25th Annual Juried Show at the Contemporary Arts Center in Las Vegas.

The 2014 Artebella Invitational runs June 4 through August 2, 2014 at PUBLIC, 131 West Main Street in Louisville, Kentucky.
