Revelry Gallery artist David Nichols

Our Kentucky-centric theme from Revelry Gallery continues with unique state- shaped reliefs primarily created using recycled license plates attached to wood. David Nichols has created such pieces for many other states, but the examples we see here are of The Bluegrass State.

“You could call it industrial fine art or Folk Art, says Nichols, “but I think it’s just a neat medium that not many people are using in a creative way.” The artist’s lack of thematic pretention and focus on craft does echo the naïve aspect of Folk Art. “My main focus right now is creating state-shaped pieces of various sizes and designs. I’m always looking for new states and introducing new materials (native to the states) such as discarded bourbon barrels.”

Nichol’s work is available at Revelry Gallery in Louisville’s NuLu District. On December 12 from 6-10pm he will be participating in the annual Deck The Walls exhibit (#deckthewalls2015) at VIA Studio, 223 South Clay Street, also in NuLu.
