Textile, or fiber art, seems to carry an inherent weight of memory. The fabric and threads of various materials have meaningful connotations – connections to our individual past. So it makes good sense that Ehren Reed should find textiles a suitable medium for capturing her own history through the power of associated memory. The textures and tactility keep us from seeing the images as clearly as something new, as if the memory has faded into the background of our subconscious, perhaps growing more and more distant. Reed’s work has been accepted into juried exhibitions in California, Brooklyn, and Washington, D.C.

She has spent her life working as an art educator for organizations such as Hostelling International Golden Gate Council, Council on Developmental Disabilities, Boys & Girls Clubs of Kentuckiana, and The Weber Group. Even after so much experience, Reed derives so much pleasure from working with children, and her engagement with them is profound and entirely natural.

Reed is now the full-time Outreach Programs Coordinator for Louisville Visual Art (LVA), and it is in this role that she has helped refresh the Studio 2000 program, an ongoing partnership between Louisville Metro Parks and LVA. Now in its 2nd year, Studio 2000 pairs high school students who aspire to be visual artists with professional artists to work in clay, fiber & mixed media. Each participant receives a $500 stipend at the end of the eight-week session. Proceeds from this sale are recycled through Studio 2000 to support future programming.

“This year’s Studio 2000 students showed exceptional promise when they were accepted into the program and we have certainly seen that play out over the last eight weeks! They have proven to be an incredibly focused, curious and passionate group of young artists and we are so excited to share their work with our community!” – Ehren Reed.

The Studio 2000 Exhibition and Sale will take place on August 4th, 2016 at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. There will be a preview from 5:00- 5:30pm, and the actual sale will run 5:30-7:00pm.
