Harmony is celebrated in art; a juxtaposition of color and composition that is pleasing or comforting to the viewer; but tension is perhaps more crucial in maximizing the visual impact of a painting. Kayla Bischoff describes her work as, “… a balancing act of spontaneous expression, stream of consciousness, abstraction, and representation,” and the dynamic of several such threads fighting for attention is what sets her work apart.
Yet it is not chaos that we find in Bischoff’s paintings. The overcrowded scenes of unusual characters jostling among one another are injected with whimsy enough to lure the viewer in through the crowd. Once you have entered, it is easy to get caught up in the fantastic array of surreal personalities before you encounter what the artist calls the, “…inner trepidation,” to be found within.
Bischoff is featured in Painting & Drawing 2015 (pt.1) at Galerie Hertz May 26 through July 4, 2015. She also is the Gallery Manager at Kavier Forge & Gallery, Director of Communications for LOOK: Louisville Area Art Gallery Consortium, and a regular contributor to the Galerie Hertz newsletter. The Bellarmine University graduate was the 2013-14 BecVar Artist-in-Residence at the university’s School of Nursing and Health Sciences, a residency the purpose of which is to bridge the gap between the arts and the health sciences. Bischoff was also awarded Best in Show at the Bellarmine Student Art Show in 2013 and 2014.
