Simon Gallo is primarily a printmaker. He enjoys the structure and process of the various techniques, but he is proficient in most all 2-D media. When we look at the pieces offered here, we see a mix of materials: graphite, watercolor, and ink, that lend the images a graphic muscularity that might also be found in mono- printing, a spontaneous quality that feels as immediate as art made before out very eyes. It is a characteristic we can see in all of Gallo’s work, even through the printmaking process and design projects. The feeling for process is part of what makes Gallo an effective teacher, and he has just been hired to be a part of the Art faculty at Westport Middle School.
Gallo came to town just before starting on Studio 2000 program, an ongoing partnership between Louisville Metro Parks and Louisville Visual Art. Now in its 2nd year, Studio 2000 pairs high school students who aspire to be visual artists with professional artists to work in clay, fiber & mixed media. Each participant receives a $500 stipend at the end of the eight-week session. Proceeds from this sale are recycled through Studio 2000 to support future programming.
The Studio 2000 Exhibition and Sale will take place on August 4th, 2016 at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. There will be a preview from 5:00- 5:30pm, and the actual sale will run 5:30-7:00pm.
Notice: Artebella Daily will take a break after August 5.
Look for a new Artebella coming in September!
