Although creativity seems to come more easily to kids, it still takes an adult to help realize the fullest potential of any young artist. An ongoing partnership between Louisville Metro Parks and LVA now in its 2nd year, Studio 2000 at Shawnee Arts & Cultural Center pairs high school students who aspire to be visual artists with professional artists to work in clay, fiber, & mixed media. Each participant receives a $500 stipend at the end of the eight-week session.
Ella Gorstein, Studio 2000 participant tells us, “I have learned so much from Studio 2000! Being in this program has been a truly amazing opportunity- something I never would have dreamed I could be a part of. I’ve met other amazing artists, received very helpful critiques, made pieces I’m proud of, and had the most fun summer ever!”
The program culminates with a public exhibition and sale on August 4th at the Kentucky Center. Proceeds from this sale are recycled through Studio 2000 to support future programming. In the past two years the sale was hugely popular, and drew a big crowd of collectors.
“The partnership between Metro Parks, Louisville Visual Art and most importantly, participating students (and their families) has been an exciting experience and is a program that does positively impact a community,” said Portia White, Manager of Arts Programs, Metro Parks & Recreation.
“My second year with Studio 2000 has been another great time and experience. Studio 2000 has helped me become a better artist because the instructors are very encouraging and push us to take up more things in different medias that allows us to grow in every part of art. The greatest value of my participation is just forming bonds and allowing art to express how I feel.” said Christopher Young, Studio 2000 participant.
The Studio 2000 Exhibition and Sale will take place on August 4th, 2016 at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. There will be a preview from 5:00- 5:30pm, and the actual sale will run 5:30-7:00pm.
