Painter Susan Howe is owner of Mudpies Studio and Gallery. Teaching art classes places her in the studio every day and the resulting routine keeps her skills sharp. Howe believes in exaggerating the essential and eliminating the obvious in her paintings. In fact, her only goal is to represent the relationship between form and color.

“My sources of inspiration vary, however a strong light source drives my compositions,” the artist explains. “A limited palette is always my start. Cityscapes have been on my easel of late. Right now I am working on images of New York City. I love the bright yellow cabs!”

Howe enjoys creating large-scale works, and is especially fond of animal painting. Her studio will be included in the Louisville Visual Art Association and Hite Art Institute’s Open Studio Weekend, September 13-14, 2014. The tour allows the public to visit studios with art professionals to discuss the process of art making and artwork directly with the artist. Proceeds support art education scholarships for youth. One wristband ticket per person is good for both Saturday (9/12) and Sunday (9/14). $20 for LVAA members and $25 for non-members. Student admission is $10.
