Help Us Transform the Future for Gifted Young Artists, Poets & Visionaries!

Louisville Visual Art (LVA) and Louisville Waterfront Park proudly announce the Waterfront Park LVA Juneteenth Camp: a tuition-free celebration of art and learning for ages 7- 12 that runs June 14 – 18, 2021. Local artist and poet Lance Newman will lead this joyful adventure of discovery, animating the entire length of Louisville’s Waterfront Park. Finding inspiration in works of Bill Traylor, Betye Saar, Langston Hughes and Nikky Finney. Lunch and snacks provided. An exhibition of campers’ original art and writing is planned to occur at LVA Gallery in Portland after camp concludes.

To fill the 10 slots in the inaugural Juneteenth Camp, we’re asking teachers and principals at schools in the Zones of Hope to recommend 2 students with promise and passion for the arts. Once a recommendation** is received, parents will receive both online and paper applications.

In addition to completing the application form, nominated campers will compose a 250-word essay or a 1-minute video exploring the theme: “How Art Changes the World!” The deadline to submit applications is 5pm, May 21, 2021.

Applications will be reviewed by a jury to determine the cohort of campers.

In this clip, Teaching Artist Lance Newman shares how the transformative power of art and poetry can bring life-changing benefits to Juneteenth Camp participants and their communities. View the clip here

**Recommendation indicates that the nominated student is capable of creating and collaborating with confidence and success in the visual and/or literary arts, and has the maturity to enjoy camp activities responsibly without disrupting others.
