Louisvillians Who Lead is inspired by the internationally recognized artist Robert Shetterly's Americans Who Tell the Truth exhibit. The Open Doors project was developed to duplicate Shetterly's work on a local level. Students met weekly with artist Annette Cable, interviewed and photographed Louisville community leaders, and then portraits were created from the photographs. The project was integrated into their Social Studies classes by having students research the Louisvillians interviewed. This Open Doors project was such a success that there have been five editions.
“The best thing about painting is the release of emotions. You can be depressed and angry, then take the canvas that is as lonely and empty inside as you, and bring color into its life. After you are finished you have a brilliant piece of art that lifts you up from the ground and makes you proud and releases your anger.”
