Deborah Whistler is currently the Program Director of Art at Spalding University. She received her BFA from Miami University in 1981 and her MFA with a concentration in printmaking from the University of Cincinnati in 1996.

Moreman Gallery has opened A SIREN'S KISS  by Deborah Whistler,  on view through July 17, 2021.

Deborah was born in Middletown OH and was raised in a small farming community outside of Oxford OH. Growing up, Deborah was fascinated with fairy tales and how the little girl in those stories could overcome fear and obstacles to face and slay the dragon. It wasn’t that these stories proved that monsters exist that fascinated her but that they convinced her that monsters could be beaten. “For me, one pivotal moment was when I first watched the movie The Wizard of OZ. It was that dramatic shift between black and white to color that I connected with.  It was in the imagination that all seemed possible. At 6 years old I realized that the man behind the curtain was a fraud and that the little girl and her misfit friends had the power to problem-solve their way out of any sticky situation.”

Cuban-born artist Carlos Gamez de Fransisco is a painter, sculptor, photographer, and filmmaker who is interested in history and storytelling in his work. Gamez de Francisco uses a Baroque aesthetic with a sense of contemporary fashion to create portraits that blend historical references with a modern painterly approach. His work has been collected by the Evansville Museum, 21C Museum, the Fashion Resource Center at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cuba Ocho Museum and Performing Arts Center, Polanco’s Collection in Havana, Cuba, and Louisville’s Metro Hall.

Carlos is the winner of the 2021 Fischer Award for Visual Art, granted by the Community Foundation of Louisville and Louisville Visual Art. He is also one of the Featured Artists for the 2021 art[squared] Fundraiser

Artebella On The Radio: June 17

The (Un)Known Project is a collaborative, two-year initiative led by IDEAS xLab to tell the stories of both known and unknown Black men, women, and children that were formerly enslaved and hidden figures in Louisville, Kentucky. This week we talk with old friends William Duffy & Dave Caudill, the two sculptors working ion this project, which will be unveiled Saturday, June 19.

William Duffy was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. Always having a special talent for painting and drawing, Duffy graduated from the Louisville School of Art with a BFA in painting.

Duffy’s work can be found in numerous private, corporate, and public collections, including Phillip Morris USA, Brown-Forman Corporation, Kentucky Fried Chicken (now YUM! Brands, Inc.), Humana Inc., The Louisville Orchestra, and the J.B. Speed Art Museum.

David Caudill creates artworks for public, corporate and private collections. His larger public works are found at Louisiana’s Rip Van Winkle Gardens, East Tennessee’s Horizon Center park, the University of Kentucky’s Singletary Center for the Arts, and the University of Louisville School of Music. Corporate collections include Brown-Forman Corporation and Fire King International. Individual collectors across America have acquired his work.

He is also one of the few sculptors in the world who have created an environmental undersea sculpture. Caudill’s artwork was placed on the seabed near Nassau, The Bahamas.

The {Un) Known Project’s first public art installation "On the Banks of Freedom" gets unveiled June 19 as part of Juneteenth: Past, Present, Future.

A Louisville native, Norman Spencer is known for his printmaking. His work focuses on themes such as identity, community, and the human relationship to their surroundings. His artworks are in private collections around the country.
