Archie Borders’ new film Under the Eiffel Tower has SOLD OUT its Louisville premiere tonight at Speed Cinema, but there are several other showings on the schedule in the next week.
Barbara Hanger & Wayne Ferguson are but 2 of the 30 or so artists featured in Louisville Artists:Carry On, an exhibit opening September 23 at LVA. John Begley curated the show, and all three were our guests on LVA's Artebella On The Radio this week to talk about making a life in the arts in Louisville. John Begley is currently a Freelance art worker (artist, curator, art services provider). Previously he was Gallery Director and Assistant Professor of Art (Emeritus), Critical and Curatorial Studies graduate program coordinator at the Allen R. Barbara Hanger has worked in printmaking, paper making and book arts. She joined the faculty of the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Louisville in 1982 after completing her MFA degree at Ohio University. Hanger’s work has been exhibited in numerous invitational and traveling exhibitions locally, regionally and internationally including Mainz, Germany and Cortona, Italy. Barbara Hanger has received competitive grants from the Kentucky Foundation for Women, the Kentucky Arts Council, and the Ohio Arts Council.
Wayne Ferguson has been creating unique works in clay for over 30 years. A Kentucky native, Wayne is mostly self-taught in clay. While he has attended workshops throughout the region he works mainly as a studio potter creating one-of-a-kind works. Wayne has been a roster artist with the Kentucky Arts Council for over 20 years, and he has taught at numerous public schools throughout Kentucky. Wayne was awarded the Rude Osolnik Award by the Kentucky Craft Marketing Program in 2006 and has been awarded the Early Times Scholarship as well. His work is published in Ceramics Monthly Magazine as well as other magazines and books.
Ramona Lindsey from Community Foundation of Louisville and Susanna Crum from Indiana University Southeast came to the WXOX 97.1 FM studio to talk about the 2018 Hadley Prize for Visual Art. In 2013, Susanna was the 1st recipient of the prize, and the discussion focused on what makes for a competitive application for grants such as this.
We had a great time visiting students at St. Joe's as they worked with Lori Kelley, an art therapist from LVA, to create their very own prints! Students began by sketching a few options on paper. From there, they selected their favorite to draw onto linoleum!
Once they drew their sketch on linoleum, students worked carefully to carve their blocks— making sure not to carve too deep or too shallow and to always cut away from their hands!
The next step might have been the student's favorites— getting to mix and blend colors on plexiglass to use to ink their blocks! We got pretty messy, but it was well worth it!
From there, students were able to make print after print— experimenting with different colors and techniques. Their work was so lovely! We can't wait to visit again and see what else they've been up to!
