The 2021 Arts-Louisville Theatre Awards will live stream this March 25, and as a part of this year's special edition, Angelica Santiago & Crystian Wiltshire talk about being BIPOC actors working out of Louisville. Join us this Thursday on WXOX 97.1 FM, or stream on Artxfm.com at 10 am.

Angelica Santiago, a multicultural chica born and raised Jersey native, is an actress telling the stories that need to be told. Having graduated from Montclair State University with her BFA in acting she uses the skills towards her craft to connect with people around the world and dive into her work in an even more personal way. Angelica's passion for acting comes from her desire to inspire audiences from all over and allow them to be affected by the stories of people that must share what they have to say. She was apart of the 2018-19 Actors Theatre of Louisville Acting Apprenticeship and has continued to work off and on in Louisville for Actors Theatre, Kentucky Shakespeare, and the Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati.

Crystian Wiltshire is originally from Brooklyn, New York but is an alumnus of the African American Theatre Program at the University of Louisville Department of Theatre Arts. He has worked with Stage One Family Theatre, Kentucky Shakespeare, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, and the Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati.

The application for The Fischer Award for Visual Art is now open and this week we discuss how to craft the the best submission for such opportunities with filmmaker Naveen Chaubal and printmaker Susanna Crum. Naveen Chaubal was born and raised in a small town in Indiana to parents who emigrated from India. Throughout his schooling, he was on the path to become an engineer, but when his older brother decided to pursue dance and music at NYU, he started seriously thinking about the arts and film as a life path.

Chaubal graduated from the USC School of Cinematic Arts where he was awarded the Thomas Bush Scholarship in Cinematography. Currently, he not only enjoys exploring the field of cinematography, but also photography through short films, music videos, art films and
commercials. He looks forward to working as much as possible and traveling to all parts of the world. In 2018 he received the M.A. Hadley Prize in Visual Arts.

Susanna Crum is Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University Southeast, where she serves as area head of the Printmaking program. She received an MA and MFA in Printmaking with minors in Sculpture and Intermedia from the University of Iowa, and a BFA in Printmaking from Cornell University.

Susanna returned to her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky to start the city’s first fine art print studio, Calliope Arts, with fellow printmaker Rodolfo Salgado. In 2013, she was the recipient of the inaugural M.A. Hadley Prize for Visual Arts, which supported the studio's research and development. 

Deja Jackson is a Program Officer at the Community Foundation of Louisville.. She brings with her a background that includes coordinating, improving processes, and project management.

Deja’s most recent work experience was with Louisville Promise and 55,000 Degrees as the Initiative Coordinator. She is a councilmember for the Council of Friends (of the Library). She is also the 2019 President of Louisville Youth Group.

Kevin Ashford has taught for JCPS and with LVA's CFAC program for many years. He will be recognized as Visual Art Educator at the 2021 LVA Honors on March 11. This week he talks about his career. Tune in to WXOX 97.1 FM, or stream on Artxfm.com Thursday at 10:00 am to hear more about it.

After graduating from Kentucky State University with a BA in Art Education, Kevin Ashford attended and received his Master’s in Education from Spalding University after settling in Louisville, Kentucky. He has taught art at Crosby Middle School for twenty-one years and for (LVA) Louisville Visual Art for the last twelve years. Mr. Ashford is best known for his distinct hand-painted surrealistic floral paintings in watercolor. These works and others can be seen on his website, blessed-artist.com.

Jaylin Stewart is an artist from West Louisville who has dedicated her talents to victims of violence & the community by creating therapeutic artwork. Through her non-profit company, Adah School of Art she provides visual art instruction to children. Although primarily a painter, her three-dimensional installation, God Rest America, was at Scheherezade Gallery in 2019. As the COVID pandemic overtook us last spring, she kept busy executing chalk sidewalk murals in tribute to health care workers, her portrait of Breonna Taylor gained national recognition, and more recently she has been actively creating new murals like the one at 1600 West Broadway. On March 11 she will receive the Emerging Artist Award at the 2021 LVA Honors, which this year will be a virtual event and fundraiser for Louisville Visual Art.

John was Gallery Director and Assistant Professor of Art (Emeritus), Critical and Curatorial Studies graduate program coordinator Allen R. Hite Art Institute, University of Louisville 2001 – 2014 (Retired) He came to Louisville originally to be the Executive Director of Louisville Visual Art Association (1983 – 2001). John was also a founding board member of Artxfm.com/WXOX 97.1 FM and is now involved with their sister station, WXND 100.9 FM helping to preserve the WCHQ Local Music Library

On March 11, he will receive the Legacy Award during the 2021 LVA Honors program, which this year will, of course, be a virtual, on-line fundraiser. You can find out more about participating in that by visiting lvahonors.org, a new website devoted to that initiative.
