Artists Talk with LVA: May 15, 2025

Abi Womack is an artist born in Bowling Green Kentucky. Abi has exhibited her work at Carbon Copy, Speed Mansion Solarium Gallery, 849 Studio Gallery all in Louisville, Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center (SKyPAC) in Bowling Green.

Rebekah Calhoun is a Kentucky-born mixed media artist based in Louisville. She was a member of the Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts class of 2021. In 2022 she was a co-creator and artist in Creamy Dream at the Carbon Copy Gallery and has shown work at the Speed Mansion Solarium Gallery and 849 Gallery. 

Josie Seymour is an American artist, born in Kentucky, but from all over. Josie returned to Kentucky and started creating music videos, and taking photos for clients. While attending college she worked as a Production Assistant on a variety of films and shows. Josie was a photographer for unpublished magazine having photos published in issues such as“flare” and “New beginnings” also having photos in the book “Archive: Summer 2021”

Louisville native and U of L grad Robyn Gibson is a Black artist focused on self-portraiture and the exploration of her trauma, grappling with Black identity, the depiction, perception and value of Black bodies, and what it means to be authentic. Robyn Gibson is an emerging artist and curator living and working in Louisville, KY.

She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Louisville in 2014, earning a BFA in Painting and a BSBA in Marketing. Since receiving her MFA in 2018 from the New York Academy of Art, Gibson has been developing her multidisciplinary art practice.

After she started boxing in 2016, Gibson began incorporating it into her art practice. Larger-than-life-sized bold, gestural charcoal figures on canvas, a lyrical writing style meant to pack a punch, and voluptuous vessels inspired by her own curves all convey the movement and force important to her work and inspired by her boxing practice. The act of taking up space and claiming ownership of it is important to her work. As a Black artist focused on self-portraiture and the exploration of her trauma, Gibson grapples with Black identity, the depiction, perception and value of Black bodies, and what it means to be authentic.

Dr. Angela Hagan & Dr. Debra Clary

Debra Clary will be the keynote speaker at the LVA Centennial Luncheon on May 9. She and LVA Director Angela Hagan join us this week to discuss the power of education. Tune in to WXOX 97.1 FM / Artxfm.com each Thursday at 10 am to hear Artists Talk with LVA.

Dr. Debra Clary is an executive with three decades of leadership experience with prominent companies such as Frito-Lay, Coca-Cola, Jack Daniel’s, and Humana. Her broad-based functional expertise spans from global operations & marketing, strategy development, human resources, to corporate board and investor relations.

Debra has translated her message into the theatrical realm as a testament to her creativity and passion. She wrote and performed the play 'A Curious Woman' off-Broadway in 2023, showcasing her ability to communicate and engage through multiple mediums.

LVA Executive Director Dr. Angela Hagan grew up in southeastern Illinois, but claims Louisville as her adopted hometown after moving here in 1997. Her academic and career path, which has never taken her far from the Ohio River Valley, has related to the ecosystem supporting healthy, vibrant, thriving communities.

 For over a decade, she worked in leadership functions including development, marketing and communications, and community engagement for nonprofit organizations focused on affordable and fair housing, education, youth development, and art (KMAC Museum) before spending a decade at Louisville-based Fortune 60 health plan Humana, where she led functions and teams in member engagement and community health strategy and insights.

Artists Talk with LVA: April 24, 2025

Levi Justice & Christopher St. John open new exhibits at Galerie Hertz this weekend and join us in the studio. Tune in to WXOX 97.1 FM/Artxfm.com each Thursday at 10 am to hear Artists Talk with LVA.

Levi Justice is a contemporary visual artist specializing in large-scale, hyper-realistic oil paintings. At age 12, he began working with wood & various metals, creating sculptures he sold to private collectors. Justice pursued fine art at Kentucky's Centre College.  After graduating, Levi moved to North Carolina, where he began managing art galleries & teaching artistic techniques to his community. Levi currently resides in Louisville, Kentucky.

Christopher St. John received his BFA from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, and his MFA in ceramics from Ohio University. He served four years of active duty in the Army. Travel has informed his practice, both in choice of material, appreciation of light and landscape, and adaptability to changing conditions. Christopher has artwork in the permanent collections of both the Museum of the North in Fairbanks, Alaska, and the Hawaii State Art Museum. He is always at home in a forest. 

Christopher began his journey with ceramics 5 years ago. He decided to return to graduate school to deepen his understanding of this field and devote himself fully to becoming a teaching artist. He is currently the Resident Artist at Indiana University Southeast. The values and goals of his work lie in support of the challenges human beings currently face on the only known planet that supports life. 

Two Approaches to Portraiture opens at Galerie Hertz Saturday, April 24 with a reception from 1 - 3 pm.

KMAC Couture 2025: Lucky #13 is a wearable live art runway show presented by KMAC Museum. It is the signature fundraiser for KMAC Museum that provides funding for the Museum's educational programs and exhibitions. This event offers a unique way to experience art and fashion. KMAC Couture features and supports emerging and established artists, costumers, designers, and milliners through the extraordinary presentation of original couture pieces of wearable art and conceptual fashion designs. Mallory Quisenberry is a fashion designer and the founder of Green Folk Collective which features her “handcrafted slow fashion designs. This is her second time with KMAC Couture.

Elizabeth Windisch is a Multimedia artist, surface pattern designer and archivist. Her current designs are created from hand drawings inspired by the unseen forces of nature.

Kris Thompson is Development & Special Projects Manager at KMAC Museum. She is also a fiber artist living and working in Louisville, KY. Recent group exhibitions include an all woman show which she co-curated and exhibited in and a show at Moreman Gallery.
