Give for Good Louisville

2018-03-14 10.21.48_cropped-1.jpg

Louisville Visual Art (LVA) provides exceptional art education, vital artist engagement, and uplifting art-centered outreach to improve lives and inspire communities all across the Metro area. Going strong for over 100 years, LVA cultivates new generations of creative leaders with programs throughout Greater Louisville.

This year, our Giving Day again focuses on Children’s Fine Art Classes (CFAC), which have expanded horizons for young artists since 1925. Every year, passionate CFAC teachers nurture Louisville's art ecosystem at the roots with innovative instruction reaching over 1000 students in five counties of Kentuckiana. For 94 years, LVA has kept CFAC tuition-free so that every talented and motivated art student may participate, regardless of economic status (families who are able are asked to pay a small administrative fee). CFAC helps LVA light the way for visual art in Louisville by keeping art within reach of everyone.

Your donation says that you want Louisville to remain a place where any child who loves to make art can learn from the best-qualified among us to improve themselves and our city.

The River: Portland Art & Heritage Fair Exhibiton

cropped-Wordpress-Header-1.png

The 5th Annual PAHF Juried Exhibition is a juried exhibition and will be on view at the Marine Hospital in Portland,  Saturday, September 29, 2018 from 11am–5pm. The exhibition is part of the Portland Art & Heritage Fair and a production of Portland, Now!

Disappear into a historic neighborhood nearly erased by the floods of time….
Where things aren’t always what they seem!

Saturday, September 29th
11am to 5pm   -  rain or shine

Forget about Bermuda, have you witnessed the Portland Triangle?! Formed by three of our most historic buildings – The US Marine Hospital, The Portland Museum and The Dolfinger School – our triangle hasn’t been prominently featured in any sappy 80s Beach Boys hits, probably only because “Portland” doesn’t rhyme with “come on pretty mama”.

Enough talk about tropical contact highs, it’s time to announce the Fifth Annual Portland Art & Heritage Fair (PAHF)! Set your calendars for Saturday, September 29th as we once again invite you to come celebrate the creativity and the history of our neighborhood with us.

We’ll be announcing details that you’ll wanna catch a glimpse of, as the date approaches. Rest assured PAHF 2018 will put a dreamy look in the eye of your entire family! For now, check out our mysterious new poster and start planning where you want to go (to get away from it all) in a couple months!

Packed full of history, heritage and ephemera from the walls of Portland’s historic buildings – the Portland Museum will engage you with archeology, art and history. You’ll learn something and you’ll be having so much fun you won’t even know it

The Future Is Now is a mentorship program that matches high school students with professional local artists in Louisville, Kentucky. We are excited to to continue our partnership with KyCAD!

Over the course of this program, each student/mentor team works towards creating individual and collaborative pieces for an exhibition showcasing their work.

Along the way, program facilitators from Louisville Visual Art and KyCAD work with artist mentors to teach the students new artistic processes, portfolio building, how to get the most out of a critique of their work, how to give meaningful critiques of their peers' work, exhibition design, installation, marketing, and what it takes to be a professional artist.

The program culminates in the gallery, where students experience curatorial practices by participating in exhibition layout and installation of artwork. They also help with promoting and hosting the opening reception.

Visiting Artist Open House - Miller / Weeks

Lenihan Sotheby_2018.jpg

Lenihan Sotheby’s International Realty presents an exhibition of new work by Douglas Miller and Karen Weeks. Presented by: First Financial Bank. In affiliation with Louisville Visual Art.

Douglas Miller is a professional artist whose drawings have been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the US. Additionally, Douglas does freelance illustrations as well as private and corporate commissions. Recently, he received the prestigious Al Smith Fellowship for Visual Arts from the Kentucky Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. His artwork is in the collection of the Evansville Museum of Arts and Science, the University of Louisville, the Speed School of Engineering, and numerous private collections throughout the world. His work has appeared in Fine Art Connoisseur, American Artist: Drawing magazines, Manifest Gallery Drawing Annuals and has been featured on NPR First Watch. In 2018, Douglas received his MFA from the University of Louisville.

Karen Weeks is primarily a printmaker, utilizing the letterpress printing machine to generate her imagery. Her focus on pattern and repetition is reflected in her use of this outmoded technology built for creating multiples of the same image. Creating exact replicas, though, is not her aim; instead through exploring the variations within limitations, she finds a more compelling goal. After generating these images and color fields, she later collages them into unique pieces of artwork. Karen finds inspiration from nature and enjoys meditating on the repetitious systems of nature from which all patterns evolve; evoking in her imagery the cross section of technology and the natural world.

The Community Foundation of Louisville, in partnership with Louisville Visual Art, is pleased to announce that Louisville-based multi-media artist KCJ Szwedzinski is the winner of the sixth annual Mary Alice Hadley Prize for Visual Art. The $5,000 award is an opportunity for local artists to enhance their careers through a targeted enrichment experience of their own design.

Louisville Visual Art will honor KCJ Szwedzinski on Thursday, June 21, from 5:30-7:00 p.m. in their Portland gallery at 1538 Lytle Street, 40203. The reception is free and open to the public.

“My most recent body work has been on Jewish memory, identity and legacy," said Szwedzinski. "As an artist, I am continually mindful of who I intend as my audience. I question why it is important for me to make work about Judaism and how my work connects to contemporary issues.”

Szwedzinski will use the award to visit the Jewish Contemporary Museum and the Holocaust Center in San Francisco, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and Archives in Washington, D.C., and the Genealogy Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana, as well as to take a course at the Rare Book School in Philadelphia.

"I believe that the act of remembering is a powerful tool in fostering empathy and breaking barriers of bias," Szwedzinski said. "It's important, now more than ever, to remind people that when true diversity is present in a community is when we all thrive."

The $5,000 M.A. Hadley Prize is awarded from the George and Mary Alice Hadley Fund at the Community Foundation of Louisville. Focused on the arts and humanities, particularly visual arts, crafts, theater and the Louisville Free Public Library, the endowment has supported our community for more than 25 years.

The Hadley Prize winner is selected through a blind process by a diverse panel of arts professionals from Louisville and the surrounding area. The 2018 prize drew 40 applicants from the greater Louisville area, including Southern Indiana, whose work demonstrated mastery in ceramics, graphic design, drawing, crafts, painting, photography, sculpture, video, film and printmaking.

“Art soothes and calms our collective souls. Art causes us to question and to think. Through the years, art has been used to tell the story of those who came before. The work of KCJ Szwedzinski is powerful and will cause those who see her work to pause and reflect on this horrific period in our history,” said Louisville Visual Art's Executive Director, Lindy Casebier. “Louisville Visual Art is pleased to partner with the Community Foundation of Louisville in support of KCJ's growth as an artist and in turn share that personal growth with others in our community.”

Szwedzinski's itinerary has been designed to fuse personal history and artistic inspiration, "to synthesize seemingly disparate bodies of knowledge - archival practices for historical information and my personal inherited legacies."

“This experience will broaden my ability to make work that is rooted in my own Judaic heritage,” said Szwedzinski, “while facilitating engagement of a more universal audience.”

“It’s important for people to seek to find common ground and part of the way we do this is from remembering our collective history," said Susan Barry, President & CEO of the Community Foundation. "We are pleased the Hadley Prize will support an artist like KCJ, who is using art to begin difficult conversations around the Holocaust, one of the most tragic moments in our history."

The Community Foundation of Louisville believes that art is a vital part of a community where people and places thrive. The Hadley Prize is just one of the ways that the Community Foundation of Louisville supports local artists. Hadley Creatives is the Foundation's six-month comprehensive professional development program for working artists that recently celebrated its inaugural class with an exhibition that is running through July 1 at KMAC.

This exhibit, all non-digital darkroom prints, charts a path starting with punk shows in Texas and crawls through the '90s graffiti scene in San Francisco, freight-hopping scenarios, art openings in Los Angeles, house shows in Louisiana, generator shows on the Monongahela River, etc., all seen through Daniel's unique spelunker flash-lit vision.

Bill Daniel was a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship for Creative Arts and is an American experimental documentary film artist, photographer, film editor, and cinematographer. He is also an installation artist, curator and former zine publisher. His full-length film, "Who is Bozo Texino?," about the tradition of hobo and railworker boxcar graffiti, was completed in 2005 and has screened extensively throughout the United States and Europe.

This thrilling and vital fundraising event is held annually in early spring. More than 200 artists create 12" x 12" works of art for the art[squared] exhibition & sale, which will be available for $125 each. All artists will remain anonymous until the squares are purchased - once a piece is sold, the artist's name will be revealed. Proceeds from art[squared] support Children's Fine Art Classes (CFAC).

How art[squared] works...

More than 200 paintings line the walls of the LVA Gallery. Each piece is priced at $125 and signed on the back, leaving the front anonymous. The beauty of an anonymous exhibition is viewers will be able to respond to the artwork on its merits alone, without prejudice or preference.

The exhibition is unseen by the public until the doors open. Guests have 30 minutes to browse the artwork and seek out their favorites. All works will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. As each piece is sold, the buyer learns the identity of the artist, and a placard with the selling artist's name will replace the artwork on the wall.

All proceeds benefit CFAC, which educates more than 1,000 artistically talented and visually driven children annually in the Greater Louisville area. This provides students with scholarships and helps offset instructor and supply costs in all 12 participating Kentuckiana counties.

Vinhay Keo is originally from Cambodia, where he spent his first 10 years. He earned his BFA from the Kentucky College of Art + Design at Spalding University. A Great Meadows Foundation recipient, he received the Ellen Battell Stoeckel Fellowship to study at Yale Norfolk Summer School of Art and participated in workshops such as Anderson Ranch Art Center and Anne West’s writing reflection. His work has been exhibited throughout galleries in Louisville, with a recent solo exhibition at Moremen Moloney Contemporary Gallery. That exhibit, Confront, was one of the more important exhibits of 2017, a commentary that spoke to the chaos in American society, the worth and importance of the immigrant in that chaos, and the very core value of diversity that lies at the heart of the United States of America.

Benefactor of the Year Award - Porter Watkins
In Memory of Charlotte Price

Porter Watkins.jpg

Porter Watkins is a Louisville native who inherited a strong sense of community involvement and philanthropy from her family. Her Grandmother, Nora Iasigi Bullitt, was President of the Ladies' Auxiliary in 1913, and her uncle, Eugene “Bud” Leake, was for a decade the director of The Art Center (now know as Louisville Visual Art). Porter was a precocious child whose upbringing was a mix of the rural and the urban, characterized by adventures on horseback up and down Lime Kiln Lane and exposure to an arts and culture scene experiencing tremendous growth. Porter and her husband, George Bailey, follow their passion when it comes to the arts, and Porter put her “time, talent, and treasure” to work for several organizations over many, many years, serving on the boards of Louisville Visual Art, Sister Cities of Louisville, English Speaking Union, The Zoo, Kentucky to the World and YouthBuild-Louisville, and she has been significantly involved with Food Literacy Project at Oxmoor Farm and has recently taken an interest in the Waterfront Botanical Garden.

"Western Reverie" by Elizabeth Hardy, 2016-2017

The Bill Fischer Award for Visual Artists is a $5,000 cash prize designed to make a meaningful impact on the career of a visual artist residing in the Louisville Metro Area by providing support in the form of grants for the execution and exhibition of artwork and other efforts to foster a professional career as a visual artist. Recipients of the Fischer Prize must show a commitment to experimentation and the creative use of materials and techniques, and a commitment to pursuing a career as a professional working visual artist.

"My work seeks to stir nostalgia for the primordial past and sublime in nature, via romantic collaborations with the natural world," says 2018 winner Elizabeth Hardy. "Whether through carving marble (a material consisting of interlocking crystals made by generations of petrified tiny creatures slowly compressed by gravity at the bottom of a primordial sea), or through growing crystals as surface treatment, the role of natural phenomena as process is consistently present in sculptural works and installations".

Hardy adds, "Beyond my attraction to such processes that emphasize time passage - translating ephemeral makings into enduring works that can speak to our past and present for years to come - I am interested in producing work that honors the legacy of classic sculptural techniques which stand the test of time, married with a contemporary experimental style that defies convention."

Hardy plans to use her prize money "to provide a suitable environment with tools to establish a space to be able to create works on a larger scale than I am physically capable of doing with the restrictions of my current studio space. I could expand my practice for my own productions as well as have a proper venue to function as a learning environment that I could share the techniques I have learned with others."

A reception to present the award to Hardy will be held on Tuesday, January 9 from 5-6 p.m. at the Tim Faulkner Gallery1512 Portland Avenue, adjacent to LVA's office in Portland. The event is open to the public.

The Bill Fischer Award for Visual Artists is funded by the Artist Bill Fischer Foundation for Working Artists at the Community Foundation of LouisvilleLouisville Visual Art serves as the administrative partner to the project and competition process.
